ROOMS BY KIKI

Thoughtful interiors made from what already exists.

ROOMS BY KIKI is a design studio led by me (Kiki, surprise)! I create spaces with over 90% local and secondhand items from around Los Angeles. Working this way is more sustainable—and it brings more soul and individuality into the home. I believe that interiors should tell a story about the lives of people through time. I hope to keep “writing.”

How it started

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. My mom used to say this whenever we hunted for sea glass on the beach. As I got older, this became one of those little sayings that stick in your mind and eventually become a part of who you are.

Her words were still rattling around my subconscious when I went off to college. My friends and I scored an awesome — albeit unfurnished — apartment. I promised them that finding furniture would be “no problem” and then set out for inexpensive, thrifted furnishings as I best I could.

Soon enough, I was rewarded with treasure. It was an 11-foot, custom-made blue velvet sectional in near perfect condition.

Even after a couple years of potlucks, parties, birthdays, naps, game nights, and movie screenings, the couch held up incredibly well. When friends came over, they assumed we spent thousands of dollars on our couch and living room.

The truth? I bought the couch for literally 50 bucks. Finding this treasure sparked an obsession for rescuing this “trash” and creating beautiful spaces and memories for other people. I think rooms curated with secondhand items leads to a more charming and interesting result. (Not to mention a more affordable one).

Today, my goal is to curate spaces for clients using over 90% thrifted treasure. It may take longer, but I think it’s worth it.
